Spec

  • 1.5 oz Bourbon (or Rye)
  • 1 oz Sweet vermouth (Carpano Antica)
  • 1 oz Campari
  • Orange peel, expressed

Build

Stir all ingredients with ice for 30 seconds. Strain over a fresh large rock in a rocks glass. Express orange peel and drop in.

Story

Erskine Gwynne, Paris, late 1920s. A Negroni with whiskey instead of gin. The classic crossover cocktail when a guest says 'I don't like Campari but I'll try one.'

Service note

Rocks glass with one large cube. Ask bourbon or rye — rye drinks drier and spicier.

Tasting notes

Bitter-sweet, full-bodied, warming. Whiskey rounds the Campari's edge.
