Throwing aerates a drink without ice contact and without bruising delicate ingredients. Pour the drink between two tins held a foot apart, in a long arcing pour. Cuban technique, traditional for the Bloody Mary, Hanky Panky, and bullshots. Aerates the drink, chills lightly (if pre-chilled spirits), and shows off the bartender. Not for daily use, but every bartender should know it. Practice on water before service.
