Onboarding: Day 7 MOD checkpoint

onboarding #day-7 #checkpoint #mod

The Day 7 checkpoint is a 30-minute conversation between MOD and trainee. End of Week 1.

Pre-checkpoint

MOD reviews:

  • Coaching log entries from Days 1-7
  • Trainee's self-reflection notes (if kept)
  • Any incidents (positive or negative)

Conversation outline

  1. Open: "How's the first week going for you?" Let the trainee talk. 5-10 minutes.

  2. Strengths: "What's clicking? What's coming naturally?" Specific examples requested.

  3. Growth edges: "What's feeling hard? Where do you want more practice?" Specific examples requested.

  4. Coach review: MOD shares the coach's observations. Specific praise + specific growth edges from the coaching log.

  5. Week 2 setup: "Here's what Week 2 looks like. You'll be running a full section. I'm here, the coach is here, and the team is here. What support do you want?"

  6. Logistics: Schedule confirmation, pay run, any questions about tips/comp.

Outcomes

  • Track on: Trainee continues to Week 2 normally.
  • Extra support: Trainee gets extra coach time in Week 2.
  • Concerned: MOD documents specific issues, sets concrete goals for Week 2, schedules Day 10 check-in.
  • Role mismatch: Rare at Day 7; conversation with GM if MOD believes the role isn't fitting. Usually not concluded until Day 14.

Notes captured

MOD writes a short summary in the trainee's personnel file:

  • Strengths observed
  • Growth edges
  • Trainee's stated goals for Week 2
  • Any extra support agreed to

Standards

This is not a performance review — it's a check-in. The trainee should leave the room feeling informed and supported, not evaluated.
