Onboarding Day 12: Mistakes and ownership

onboarding #day-12 #week-2 #mindset

Goal: Trainee owns a mistake from this week openly. Mindset deep-dive. Trainee is fully running their section.

Pre-shift

MOD has a 10-minute conversation with the trainee before family meal. "Tell me one mistake from the past 11 days. Walk me through it. What did you learn?" No judgment. The goal is to model that mistake-ownership is the way we work here.

Mindset SOPs:

Ethos for the day:

During shift

Trainee runs section solo. Coach is on-call only — not shadowing. The trainee owns the section as if Day 14 has already happened.

If a mistake occurs, the trainee runs the recovery script independently and tells the MOD post-shift.

What the coach watches for (from a distance)

  • Does the trainee ask for help when needed (per sop-mindset-asking-for-help)?
  • Does the trainee own mistakes in real time?
  • Does the trainee maintain composure when the section gets heavy?

End of shift

15-minute debrief. Trainee's mistake from the day (if any) — narrated by the trainee.

Coach sign-off: Trainee asked for help at least once (asking is a strength), or didn't need to (and the section ran smooth). Trainee owned at least one mistake openly without prompting.
