Mistake recovery framework — the four steps

framework #culture

Every mistake follows the same four-step recovery:

1. Acknowledge. Out loud, to whoever's affected. "That was on me." Don't explain. Don't excuse. Don't say "but" anywhere.

2. Fix. Whatever can be fixed right now, fix. Drink wrong → remake. Cold plate → reorder. Wrong table seated → apologize and reseat. Speed matters; the longer you wait, the bigger the mistake gets.

3. Tell the MOD. Even if you fixed it. Especially if you fixed it. Hiding mistakes is the only career-ending move at Lancey. Telling them is how the room learns.

4. Document if material. If the mistake involves a comp, a guest complaint, or a near-miss safety event, write it down. The MOD owns the documentation.

What this framework is NOT: groveling, self-flagellation, or over-apologizing. Acknowledge once, fix it, move on. Excessive apology after a mistake makes the guest more uncomfortable, not less.
